In New Zealand, a storm deprives tens of thousands of people of electricity
A tropical storm hitting northern New Zealand has deprived tens of thousands of people of electricity. Five regions in the north of the archipelago were placed in a state of emergency.
Some 58,000 people were deprived of electricity Monday, February 13 in the afternoon in New Zealand, according to Roger Ball, the head of the National Emergency Management Agency, due to a tropical storm hitting the north of the country.
A state of emergency has been declared in five regions in the north of the archipelago, concerning almost a third of the 5.1 million inhabitants of the country.
Although the storm was downgraded to its cyclone status on Sunday, torrential rains and strong winds fell from trees, damaged roads and dropped power lines.
One person is missing, police said. She was on board a boat from where she sent a distress signal Monday morning near the island of the Great Barrier ( north ).
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, based in Wellington, was among the thousands of people stranded in Auckland ( north ) after the flight cancellations due to the storm.

Le Premier ministre a fait savoir que le gouvernement envisageait de déclarer l'état d'urgence national pour la troisième fois seulement dans l'histoire du pays, mais que cela n'était pas nécessaire pour le moment.
Des rafales de vent atteignant 140 km/h se sont abattues sur le nord de la Nouvelle-Zélande, et des rafales jusqu'à 110 km/h ont été enregistrées au niveau du pont du port d'Auckland.
Le ministre chargé de la gestion des urgences, Kieran McAnulty, avait averti qu'il s'agirait d'une "journée critique" en raison de la combinaison "hautement dangereuse" de vents violents et de fortes pluies.
Auckland, la plus grande ville du pays avec 1,6 million d'habitants, se remet à peine des inondations soudaines qui ont fait quatre morts fin janvier et contraint des milliers de personnes à quitter leur domicile.
Les conditions météorologiques ont bouleversé le réseau de transport néo-zélandais, avec des annulations de vols et de trajets en train et en car.
La compagnie Air New Zealand a indiqué qu'elle avait jusqu'à présent annulé 509 vols, mais que le trafic devrait reprendre normalement mardi. Elle a précisé que les déplacements de quelque 10 000 clients internationaux ont été perturbés.
